Albert N. Thiel, Jr. received his Bachelors of Arts in Philosophy in 1970 from St. Mary’s Seminary and University at Baltimore, Maryland. After serving in U.S. Army Intelligence from 1970 to 1973, he studied law at the University of New Mexico, receiving his Juris Doctor degree in 1976. He completed his Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in Finance in 1983 from the Robert O. Anderson School of Business at the University of New Mexico.
Mr. Thiel was admitted to the New Mexico Bar as well as the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico in 1976. He was admitted to the United States Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals in 1980, and the United States Supreme Court in 1982.He is currently listed in “Who’s Who in America Lawyers”
Al joined the firm of Will Ferguson & Associates as of June 1, 1999. Previously, he was a member of the firm of Robinson, Di Lando & Whitaker, a Los Angeles based litigation firm, as head of the Albuquerque office and had his own practice. Since 1983 his primary areas of emphasis have been employment, personal injury, and business litigation. His early legal career was in government service as Chief Prosecutor (1977-1980), then Division Head of the Public Safety and Personnel Division (1980-1983), of the Legal Department of the City of Albuquerque.
Mr. Thiel has trial experience in a wide variety of civil cases but primary in the areas of employment litigation and personal injury law. He has handled appellate cases at all levels up to the United States Supreme Court.
Al is a requested speaker at seminars involving insurance law and personal injury topics including several NBI Seminars. Al has been married to his wife, Joyce, for over thirty years and they have four children and one in-law. In 2008 he was awarded his fourth-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate. He continues to train with his karate club, JKA of NM, as regularly as his work and family will allow. His youngest offspring will be 22 this year and is finishing college but she has threatened to continue her education in graduate or medical school, mostly in competition with her older siblings who only have Bachelor degrees. As a result of the Thiel family overindulgence in private colleges, Al expects to be trying cases for many years to come. For many years a regular at the M & J Restaurant, he has been unsuccessfully seeking an alternate regular office for lunch since it’s closing several years ago.
