Albuquerque Police face minimal discipline from the department when they cause car accidents.
A recent report showed that in the 2017 fiscal year, taxpayers have paid more than $1,000,000 for accidents involving the police. There have been many cases this year about officers who are negligent behind the wheel of their squad car. The report stated that only a few officers are punished and they only face minimal punishment. There have been at least 5 cases where officers who caused a crash, were put on paid leave. Also, this year at least two lawsuits against the APD have finished and another two are pending. One of the punished officers is Tomas Urioste who was reprimanded for crashing into the Derry Family.
The Derry family were on the way home when they neared the intersection of Constitution and Morris. It is believed the family slowed to navigate the turn and the police car slammed into them. The officer was not en route to any crime and did not have his lights and sirens on. Minor injuries were sustained in the crash but luckily everyone escaped with their life. However, for the Derry Family’s three-year-old daughter, car rides will never be the same.
On top of the injuries, the mental trauma has left the three-year-old afraid to ride in a car. This has made the life for the Derry family hard as they try to help their daughter cope, Officer Urioste was not suspended or fined for the crash. The only punishment he received was a letter of reprimand from his captain. Statistics show that fewer than 20% of officers are punished for their crimes. Out of that 20 %, more than half are disciplined verbally. Fewer than 3% of APD officers face suspensions that last longer than one week.
