According to police, two people were killed in an accident when another vehicle crossed the median of I-40 near Grants.
A driver and passenger in a westbound vehicle were killed when their vehicle collided with a cross-over vehicle on Tuesday night, according to New Mexico State Police Sgt. Elizabeth Armijo.
Police are now investigating evidence that the driver of the cross-over vehicle was under the influence when the accident occurred. Armijo says the driver of the cross-over vehicle was driving erratically before the accident and lost control. When the vehicle entered the median, it rolled and entered the westbound lanes, colliding with other cars.
The identities of the victims have not been released.
Cross-over accidents are among the most serious types of collisions and they often lead to fatalities due to the speeds of the vehicles involved at the time of the collision. Most cross-median accidents are due to operator error when vehicles leave their lane and strike oncoming traffic. This may be due to distracted driving caused by texting or using a radio, drowsy driving, or driving under the influence.
