54-year-old Jose L. Bricino will face nearly two-years in prison for causing a crash that killed a 6-year-old.
According to police, Bricino was driving a white Ford Pickup when he crashed into a 6-year-old boy who was riding his bike. The boy was crossing the street near the intersection of 4th St and Putter Circle. Bricino then fled the scene without checking on the boy or calling the police. The impact tossed the boy from his bike and threw his body into the southern part of the intersection. The boy sustained massive injuries and EMTs took him to a hospital in EL Paso. Police began a search for the suspect immediately but were unable to locate him.
Investigators then though to check the footage of camera nearby and were able to gain a better understanding of what happened. The footage shows the boy being hit by the driver and it shows the man pulling off without stopping. The license plate was not seen in the video but the make of the car was. Police reached out to the residents in Anthony and after two days they were able to arrest him. He was charged with counts of homicide by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, and at least two other charges.
After a long legal battle, Bricino accepted a plea deal with DA’s that will cause him to spend nearly two years in jail. The family of the boy is outraged since their loved one’s killer was handed such a short sentence. It is unclear if the family will file a civil suit against Bricino. We offer our condolences to the family of the boy and hope they can move forward.
