68-year-old Linda Baragiola was killed after a Sandoval County Deputy backed over her with his car.
According to the initial report, Baragiola heard her neighbor’s house being robbed. Since she was a good Samaritan, she wanted to check on her neighbor’s dogs and make sure they were okay. Baragiola and another neighbor entered the house where they were able to confirm the safety of the dogs. On the way out of the residents, Baragiola noticed police arriving and ran out to them to tell what happened. The sheriff thanked Baragiola and the neighbor with her and then the neighbor left. This left Baragiola with three deputies in the yard.
No one noticed the deputy getting into his truck and he didn’t see anyone behind him. By the time another deputy realized what was about to happen, it was far too late. The deputy was driving a pickup which backed straight over the body of Linda Baragiola. A deputy nearby tried to tell the driver to stop, but the deputy likely couldn’t hear him.
Medical personnel was called to the scene and they were able to stabilize the woman at the scene. Paramedics then transferred her to UNM Hospital where she was pronounced dead. New Mexico State Police are now conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash and will shed light on the situation. Troopers are trying to find out if officers thought she was gone or if the deputy showed negligence while driving. As of now, it’s too early for investigators to provide an official cause of the crash. We will update the story as evidence is processed and released.
