Albert N. Thiel, Jr. received his Bachelors of Arts degree in Philosophy in 1970 from St. Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore, Md. After serving in U.S. Army Intelligence from 1970 to 1973, he studied law at the University of New Mexico School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor degree in 1976.
Al was admitted to the New Mexico State Bar and to the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico in 1976. He was admitted to the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals in 1980, and to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1982. Al was a member of a Los Angeles litigation firm and headed the firm's Albuquerque office before joining Will Ferguson & Associates in 1999. Since 1983, his primary area of emphasis has been personal injury litigation.
His early legal career was in government service as chief prosecutor and then head of the Public Safety and Personnel Division of the Legal Department of the City of Albuquerque. Al has trial experience in a wide range of civil cases but practices primarily personal injury and wrongful death law. He has handled appellate cases at all state and federal levels, up to the U.S. Supreme Court. Al is a requested speaker at seminars involving insurance law and personal injury topics, including continuing legal education seminars organized by NBI Seminars.
Al has been married to his wife, Joyce, for more than 39 years. They have four children and two recent grandchildren. In 2014 while competing in Panama, he was awarded a fifth-degree black belt in Karate by the Japan Karate Federation. He continues to train with his karate club, JKA of New Mexico, as frequently as his work and family will allow. His youngest offspring has threatened to continue her education in graduate school. Thanks to the Thiel family's overindulgence in private colleges, Al expects to be trying cases for many years to come.
