Albuquerque police say one person will be arrested for homicide by vehicle for a fatal crash that occurred on I-40.
According to the report, a driver with a passenger was traveling eastbound on I-40 prior to the crash. Investigators say the driver drove through a construction barricade at Rio Grande and crashed into the back of a backhoe. Police responded to the crash just after 2 a.m. and began to work on the scene. The crash closed Rio Grande Blvd for at least 4 hours while cleanup and medical crews worked. The passenger in the car was pronounced dead by police at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was also injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.
There was no word about anyone being inside the second vehicle or if they were injured. The initial investigation led police to realize the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. However, since the driver sustained major injuries, police have to wait until they are released from medical care. Officers at the scene believe impairment was a major factor in the crash. The driver will face charges of homicide by vehicle for her impaired reckless driving. Check back in a few days for the identity of those involved.
