31-year-old Blake Bollema was arrested on a DWI charge after an accident in Artesia.
According to the report, Bollema was traveling down U.S. Hwy 285 near 13th street prior to the incident. Also on U.S. 285 was an SUV carrying a family of six who was headed home. Investigators say Bollema was drinking that day which directly led to the crash. The two vehicles collided and the results were devastating. All six occupants inside the SUV sustained injuries. Drivers passing the wreck call 911 and emergency personnel responded. However, by the time officers and paramedics arrived, Bollema was long gone. The mother, an 8-year-old girl, and a 5-year-old boy were all airlifted to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas for treatment. The remaining three passengers were taken to a hospital via ambulance in Artesia.
About an hour into the investigation at the scene, Bollema returned in a different vehicle. He told officers that he was the driver of the truck which he left at the scene. Officers began to question Bollema and smelled the stench of alcohol. They also noticed slurred speech and other signs of impairment. He was arrested at the scene on DWI, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to render aid, and three counts of great bodily harm. After being arrested, Bollema refused to a BAC test so police obtained a search warrant. They are still waiting for the results of that test. Bollema’s vehicle was impounded where it will be looked at by forensic experts to extract the data.
