Two people were killed in a head-on collision near the intersection of Canal Rd and Castaneda Rd. Reports show that a 16-year-old female driver, whose name is being withheld due to her age, was with 16-year-old Sonia Rodriguez and her 13-year-old cousin when the three decided to go drinking after school.
The 2003 GMC pickup truck the teens were driving smashed into a 2002 Hyundai Sonata, driven by 32-year-old Elida Garcia. Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene, her passenger, 50-year-old Maria Granados was transported to University Medical Center in El Paso for treatment of serious injuries sustained in the crash.
A blood sample was taken from the teenage driver, which will determine her alcohol level at the time of the crash.
The teen was arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, driving without a license, and one misdemeanor count of allowing herself to be served as a minor.
Victims of Drunk Driving and Their Families Have Rights
Albuquerque accident plaintiff’s lawyer Will Ferguson is actively investigating this fatal crash. “Two innocent lives were taken as a result of gross negligence on several levels,” states Ferguson. “The most important thing to do at this point is to secure evidence quickly. Investigators need to look at the accident scene as well as the vehicles involved as soon as possible. Where did these teens get their alcohol? Who contributed to this accident? An experienced lawyer will look at these factors and follow the trail of evidence to determine liability, which may be assigned to multiple parties.” Will Ferguson will continue to monitor the details of this crash as they become available.
