Court documents for the case of Janet Pacheco-Morton were released Wednesday and stated she was clear of criminal charges.
According to the report, Pacheco-Morton was driving north on Griffin Rd when she attempted to make a left turn to go west on Paseo de Peralta. Authorities say Morton was on her phone while driving prior to the incident. She told police that her phone was on speaker however, witnesses say they saw her with the phone in her hands. When confronted with this, she admitted that it might be possible and told the police to agree with the witnesses. In New Mexico, it is against the law to use a cellphone without a hands-free device. However, the situation gets more complex. Two pedestrians had the signal to cross but Morton may have had a green light.
Morton told officers that the setting sun blinded her from the pedestrians and she couldn’t see. She struck two pedestrians who were trying to cross the street, fatally wounding one. The pedestrians were identified as James and Alice Cameron who both were known in the community. Alice Cameron was flown to UNM Hospital in Albuquerque where she was pronounced dead from her wounds. James Cameron was taken to a hospital in Santa Fe where he was treated for his injuries. However, they don’t compare to the grief of losing his wife. The report did not say if Pacheco-Morton sustained injuries in the crash. She was arrested by police, but only for a short time.
Investigators obtained a search warrant and check all of her call logs, messages, Facebook posts, internet searches and receipts for the day of the crash. They obtained both current and deleted messages to check for any suspicious activity. Morton was never charged with any drug-related crime so likely there was nothing to find. Court documents also show she was cleared of all criminal charges however, James Cameron has a strong claim should he choose to file. At this time it is safe to assume the Cameron Estate is planning a lawsuit against Janet Pacheco-Morton. We will keep you updated as the story develops.
