Operation Safe Driver Increases Patrol and Public Awareness
New Mexico State Police launched Operation Safe Driver, targeting Alamogordo and Roswell districts. The objective of Operation Safe Driver is to increase traffic enforcement and public awareness with a focus on safe driving around commercial motor vehicles in an effort to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities.
State police hope to positively influence safe driving behavior on commercial and non-commercial drivers while reducing commercial motor vehicle-related-crashes. This initiative follows a series of deadly accidents in Eddy and Lea Counties, respectively.
A crash near State Road 128 killed one individual and left another severely injured earlier this month. Officers indicated a tractor-trailer collided with a flatbed trailer causing the accident. Additionally, another accident caused a fatality when a brake drum from an 18-wheeler fell off, bounced off the asphalt of State Road 8 and went through the windshield of the vehicle behind the commercial motor vehicle, killing the driver.
Crash fatalities like these are what Operation Safe Driver is hoping to alleviate.
