State prosecutors believe they can prove a man named Phillip Zaman ran over a Santa Fe woman twice with his vehicle.
The initial report stated Zaman took his friend Khristopher Marshall to see his girlfriend with whom he had a rocky relationship. When they arrived at the residence of Natasha Larson, Marshall began arguing with the mother of Natasha Larson. A struggle over Natasha Larson between Marshall and Teena Larson lasted a few moments and Natasha and Marshal got into Zaman’s car. The situation was still tense and Zaman rapidly reversed to leave the scene. Teena Larson was behind the vehicle and was hit when Zaman reversed. To make matters worse, after Zaman reversed and ran over Teena Larson, he then sped forward, running over her again. 54-year-old Teena Larson was pronounced dead.
The defense attorney of Phillip Zaman claimed the incident was an accident and “not all tragedies are crimes.” However, prosecutors believe they have evidence that shows the “accident” was more intentional. Natasha Larson remembers being in the car and feeling the car run over her mom. She said that she felt sick to her stomach and thought that Zaman would stop. However, Zaman didn’t and he sped away from the scene. The defense argues that Teena Larson’s impairment was a factor in the crash. The toxicology report showed that Larson’s bac levels were at a .14, this is twice the legal driving limit. Zaman’s defense countered that Natasha Larson told law enforcement that she thought they hit a bump in the road, Natasha claimed that she was just in shock from the situation but didn’t lie to police.
This trial is still in its early stages and more information will likely be released as the trial progresses. Zaman is currently serving 13 years after being convicted for a shooting that took place two years. Check back for more updates on the story.
