51-year-old Roman Ramirez was convicted on one count of vehicular homicide for a seven-vehicle crash that killed Mary Ortega.
The original report stated the seven-car pileup occurred on Interstate 10 a few days before Christmas in 2014. According to the report, the particular area on I-25 was congested near a construction zone. Ramirez was among these cars in an 18-wheeler and as he neared mile marker 148 he ran into the back of a passenger vehicle. The force of the impact pushed the passenger vehicle in the back of a second commercial vehicle. Ramirez’s vehicle continued to travel after the crash and hit three more cars before his vehicle came to a rest.
Police at the scene conducted the investigation but were unable to provide an official cause of the crash. Paramedics were also at the scene and provided treatment to multiple people who were injured in the crash. One of the drivers involved was 43-year-old, Mary Ortega who ultimately died in the crash. The report mentioned 14 other people were involved in the crash but the report didn’t say if any of them were injured.
Almost three years after the crash, prosecutors learned the cause of the crash was Ramirez’s failure to slow down with traffic. The sentencing for Roman Ramirez was not mentioned in the report, but more details will likely in the following weeks. We will provide updates as they are released to the public. We offer our condolences to the family of Mary Ortega and hope this justice helps them heal.
