San Juan County Sheriffs say George Valdez was killed in a crash on U.S. 64.
The initial report stated that George Valdez and his passenger Arely Gomez were in a white Mustang headed east on U.S 64. It’s believed that Valdez lost control of his vehicle and drifted from his lane. The Mustang crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a westbound SUV head-on. The violent and devastating crash resulted in the death of George Valdez and sent the driver of the Chrysler to the hospital. Arely Gomez is expected to survive the crash but, she was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Drivers passing the wreckage called the police who were already in search of the vehicle.
Officers were searching for Valdez after he was reported driving reckless in the parking lot of SunRay Park & Casino. Reports say Valdez hit multiple cars in the parking lot, but at this time it is unclear if anyone was injured. When police finally arrived at the scene, they blocked off the scene to make it safe for the drivers. Paramedics arrived shortly after and pronounced Valdez dead at the scene. After initial treatment at the scene, the driver of the Chrysler and Gomez were taken to the hospital. Police have not provided updates on their condition at this time.
A full investigation is underway but at this time, no official cause is given. Since Valdez was at the casino a short time before the incident, it is likely he was under the influence of alcohol. The toxicology reports have not returned, but when they do, key evidence will be released. We offer our condolences to those involved and hope each family can move forward.
