Santa Fe police are investigating a deadly crash that took place on Old Las Vegas Hwy.
The initial investigation concluded that at least two cars collided killing 57-year-old William Weldon. Police were called to the scene by the driver and witnesses to the crash. Authorities concluded that a vehicle driven by 32-year-old Gilberto Baca drifted from his lane and struck Weldon’s car. Unfortunately, Weldon as thrown from his vehicle and killed at the scene.
Authorities at the scene were able to rule out impairment at the scene. They also checked Baca’s phone records and were able to conclude he was not distracted at the time of the crash. About 11 days after the crash, while police were interviewing Baca, he admitted that the high winds most likely contributed to the crash. Police have since charged Baca with careless driving and was booked in a county jail.
Authorities didn’t say the amount of Baca’s bond but he will likely be released shortly, we will provide updates on the story as the trial date is set.
