A blow out tire is suspected to be the cause of a fatal vehicle accident
Santa Rosa, NM (August 18, 2017) A fatal vehicle accident took the lives of three residents of South Carolina and a resident from Colorado on Interstate 40 near Santa Rosa, New Mexico. Police identified the victims as Renee Forman, 39, Shayne Wilbur, 19, Nikki Wilbur, 14 and Michelle Bates, 21.
The accident happened on Wednesday night near Santa Rosa, New Mexico on Interstate 40. Authorities say that the accident was caused by a blown out front tire on a recreation vehicle. After the tire blew out, the recreation vehicle crossed the median and crashed into two cars, causing the fatalities. Renee Forman, Shayne Wilbur and Nikki Wilbur were all from Little River, South Carolina and Michelle Bates was from Norwood, CO and all were travelling in the same vehicle at the time of the accident.
The recreational vehicle was hauling a Chevrolet Tahoe eastbound on Interstate 40. The vehicle’s front tire blew out, causing the RV to cross the median into oncoming traffic. The RV struck the four victims, who were riding in a Ford Escape, head on after it first hit a Honda Pilot, and Renee Forman, 39, Shayne Wilbur, 19, Nicole Wilbur, 14 and Michelle Bates, 21 sustained fatal injuries.
The drivers of the Honda Pilot and the RV were taken to Guadalupe County hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries and hospitalized for observation.
Authorities are still investigating the accident and no arrests have been made. The identity of the recreational vehicle driver has not been released.
