26-year-old Santiago Martinez was found guilty on charges of vehicular manslaughter for a head-on collision that killed Linsay Hinds.
The original report stated Martinez and Hinds were in a 2005 Mercedes driving on U.S. 84 near Chama, prior to the crash. For an unknown reason, Martinez swerved into oncoming traffic and began going west in eastb0und lanes. Shortly after crossing into oncoming traffic, the vehicle containing Martinez and Hinds collided head-on with an SUV carrying Lylon Vigil. The crash resulted in Lindsay Hinds being killed and Vigil and Martinez being flown to a hospital in Farmington. The report didn’t say if Hinds was wearing her seatbelt.
A few weeks after the crash, the results of the toxicology report came back and police noticed a problem. Santiago Martinez was under the influence of prescription medication and marijuana. At the scene of the crash, police found paraphernalia on Martinez but he was not immediately charged. However, in addition to his vehicular homicide charges, the jury also found Martinez guilty of possession of drug paraphernalia. Martinez’s lawyer tried to argue that the drugs were used for therapeutic and medical benefits, however, it’s pretty clear this is what led to the crash. Martinez could face up to 10 years in prison for the crash.
N0w, sometime after the crash, Lylon Vigil is still dealing with injuries sustained in the crash. We hope Mr. Vigil has a speedy recovery and we offer our condolences to the family of Lindsay Hinds. We will provide updates on this case as details are released. Check back in the coming weeks.
