Taos County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested Juan Rodelas for his involvement in a hit-and-run that severely injured Charles Covington.
Covington was walking along U.S. 64 near the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge with some family members before the crash. Juan Rodelas was speeding eastbound in a silver vehicle prior to the crash. Witnesses at the bridge say they say Rodelas throw a container of alcohol out of the window right before he hit Covington. After the collision, Rodelas fled the scene in a hurry and never looked back. Luckily, there were many people at the scene who were able to assist officers. They gave a description of his vehicle, but witnesses could not agree on the gender. Emergency personnel also responded to the scene and were able to arrive within minutes. This proved crucial as they were able to stabilize Covington at the scene. Once stable, he was flown to UNM Hospital where he underwent a successful surgery. He is now in stable condition and is expected to recover.
After an intense search, Juan Rodelas was identified and arrested for his involvement in the crash. Rodelas was spotted at his residence by a neighbor who provided the tip to police. It took police two days of sitting around the house to catch Rodelas there. Officers first spotted the vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle. They observed the missing parts of the car and noticed blood and flesh on the right side of the vehicle. Rodelas tried to say he drove through some trash but neglected to show police where the “crash” occurred. Unconvinced by Rodelas’ story, police arrested him and he has since been arraigned.
Rodelas was charged with counts of knowingly leaving the scene of an injury accident, tampering with evidence, failure to render aid, and several other counts. Stay tuned and we will provide updates on his sentencing in the near future. We send our regard to Charles Convington and hope he makes a speedy recovery.
