Deputy Phillip Ortega is recovering after his motorcycle collided with a car while on his way to assist an officer.
Taos County Sherrif’s department released a statement about the crash. The report said that Ortega was on his way to provide assistance to an officer who was making a felony arrest. Since Ortega was in a hurry, it is likely he was driving at high speeds with his lights and sirens on. As Ortega was on his way, a Chevy Malibu d
rove into his lane which caused Ortega to hit the vehicle. The force of the collision threw Ortega from the vehicle by at least 5 feet.
Luckily, Deputy Ortega was able to escape the crash with his life. He sustained some injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment
. The injuries weren’t too severe and he is expected to make a speedy recovery. The report didn’t say if the driver was cited or arrested at the scene, but a full investigation into the crash is likely underway. We wish Deputy Phillip Ortega a speedy recovery and hope he can return to serving the community soon.
