New Mexico State Police are investigating a hit-and-run that took place on State Road 518.
According to state troopers, two cyclists were hit by a white RV on State Rd 518 in Taos County. The bicyclist is said to have been following all road laws leading up to the crash. It is likely, the driver of the RV did not see the bicyclists. However, there has been a recent increase in road rage incidents in New Mexico. Both bicyclists were thrown from their bikes and the driver of the RV kept going. Luckily, the crash took place on a populated road and emergency personnel was called to the scene. Both bicyclists were seriously injured and were taken to Holy Cross Hospital for treatment. One of the bicyclists sustained multiple fractures and internal injuries and had to be flown to UNM Hospital. The other person injured in the crash remained at Holy Cross.
Police at the scene began the investigation and obtained information from witnesses to the crash. Witnesses identified the vehicle as a white Winnebago that has damage to the front. There was a vehicle found a few miles down the road from the crash, but police have not said if it was connected to the crash. Authorities are asking the community to be vigilant and assist officers in catching the suspect. Both bicyclists are expected to be okay, and we are all grateful they are still living. The driver of the RV will likely be apprehended soon. There aren’t many white Winnebago’s with damage consistent with a bike accident. Police also believe the driver of the RV was male and had at least one passenger. As the investigation continues, we will update the story.
