Taos County Sheriffs released a report about a two-vehicle collision that killed two people and left one person critically injured on State Rd 68.
According to the report, 21-year-old Juan Espinoza was driving a stolen Chevy Tahoe south along State Rd 68. Apparently, Espinoza was drunk at the time of the accident. As Espinoza neared the mile 36 marker, he lost control of his vehicle and went onto the shoulder of the road. This caused him to overcorrect which sent him into the northbound lanes. There he collided with a Nissan Juke occupied by 25-year-old Hanna Metzger and two other passengers.
Deputies, police, and medical personnel all responded to the crash and arrived at the scene quickly. Officer and deputies sectioned off the scene while paramedics treated the wounded and cleanup crews cleared the wreckage. Sadly, Hanna Metzger was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passengers 33-year-old Cedrick Kober and 26-year-old Cody Woolard were both taken to the hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, Kober’s wounds were too severe and he also passed. Only Cody Woolard survived out of his friends and he is still recovering in the hospital.
Espinoza was also injured in the crash and he was treated at Holy Cross Hospital before being detained by police. Officer at the scene conducted an investigation and was able to uncover interesting details. In addition to the crash, Espinoza stole the vehicle he was in and is the person of interest for a “shots fired” call that was placed last Friday. Espinoza was booked on two counts of homicide, a stolen vehicle charge, and at least two others.
We offer our condolences to the families of those killed in the crash and hope justice will be obtained for their families.
