(ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.) – Will Ferguson, a 1974 graduate of the University of New Mexico School of Law, is giving back to his alma mater, agreeing to underwrite scholarships at the law school and remodel the law school’s beloved basketball court.
“Know the rules, play hard, play fair,” a motto Ferguson has tried to live by since graduating from UNM Law, will grace the tip-off circle of the renovated “Ferguson Court,” the outdoor basketball court on which generations of law students have blown off steam during breaks from classes. The court is on the west side of the law school.
“Some down time and time outside, whether shooting hoops or sitting by the court during lunch, those were the best times we had in law school,” said Ferguson, managing partner of Will Ferguson & Associates, New Mexico’s largest personal injury law firm.
“I’m honored that the law school allowed me to help with the remodeling. It is deeply satisfying to help with the tuition for a new generation of law students,” Ferguson said.
Former UNM School of Law Dean Kevin Washburn, now serving as Assistant Secretary-Indian Affairs of the U.S. Department of the Interior, welcomed the gift of more than $100,000, about half of which will provide support for scholarships. Ferguson’s gift to the Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund, dedicated to funding full, three-year scholarships for deserving students, is the largest to date during the law school’s current fundraising campaign.
The remainder of the gift will be earmarked for restoration of the basketball court, installation of an all-weather playing surface and for future maintenance of the court, courtside seating, signage and amenities. When finished, it will be state-of-the-art for such facilities.
Washburn contacted Ferguson when it became clear the court needed significant restoration work. “The basketball court has played a significant role in the lives of countless law graduates,” the law school’s Office of Advancement said in a prepared statement. “Many still regularly visit the law school court to reminisce about its glory days and the good times they had there during their law school careers.”
“The law school could not be more grateful to Will,” Washburn said. “I was touched by his immediate responsiveness, and I am still moved by the generosity he has shown his law school alma mater.”
