Valencia County Sheriffs are investigating a wrong way crash that severely injured two motorcyclists.
According to the report, an elderly man was driving along I-25 before the crash. Police believe the man suffered a medical episode behind the wheel near mile marker 189, which caused him to drift from the center lane. After drifting for a short time, he crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a guardrail. The crash with the guardrail caused him to lose control and crash into two motorcyclists. Witnesses to the crash called the police and emergency personnel rushed to the scene and were able to stabilize both injured victims.
While EMTs worked on the injured motorcyclists, police began their investigation. While trying to talk to the driver who caused the crash, they noticed he was incoherent but did not appear to be drunk. Also, police did not smell alcohol and they concluded the issue must be medical. Paramedics at the scene checked out the man and took him to the hospital for further treatment. Police have not stated what the medical condition was at this time.
Luckily, all of the involved parties will survive and police say this could have ended a lot worse. We offer our condolences to those injured in the crash and hope they make a quick recovery.
